There is something I hope you will do at some point over the weekend if you can't do it right now. It's something I learned at the Rise business conference and it's a type of forward meditation to discover what it is you really want in life.
Get yourself in a comfortable spot, close your eyes and envision yourself as you will be many years from now. Much older as your life is winding down. You are in your home with mostly your memories. What types of memories would you like to look back on? What accomplishments would you like to have under your belt? How do you see your life as it unfolded? What type of person do want to have been? What are the big things that are popping out at you? What is something you really want to do that you haven't done yet? What type of parent or grandparent do you wish you would have been? What type of spouse or friend? Are you being that person now? If not, there is still time.
Once you figure out how you want to see your life at the end of it what needs to be done to make that true? If you aren't being the type of friend you really want to be then get on it. If your kids don't come to you the way you hoped they would make adjustments to make it easier for them. If you aren't getting that professional dream conquered, get on it. At this point I would like to point out that it's never too late to make changes. It's never too late to build better relationships or go after those big, lofty goals. If you can't stop thinking about law school then start the process. Look into grants, scholarships and student loans. Check out schools that you are interested in. Call the admissions office and tell them the challenges you are facing. They want you to come to their school so they will help you figure it out! Even if you are starting late it's better to have some time doing what you love than none. Am I right?
Get detailed about this visualization too. Where do you want this home to be when you are much older? What does it look like? Will there be other people in it or will you be on your own? How is your physical health? Are you making good health decisions now so that you can be your very best as you grow older? Do you still want to be going out and living it up in your 80's and 90's or would you prefer a more quiet existence? How do you want to look? How do you want to feel?
Don't wait to do this exercise. We all tend to think we have so much time and wake up one day realizing it may really be too late. If there is something you really want to do you will find a way. Maybe you can't take action right now. Maybe you need to wait for your kids to get out of school. But make the plan for yourself. What can you do now that will start you on the path you truly desire? Where do you see yourself and how will you get there?
It's Friday so you have all weekend to get this done. And I really urge you to do it. It will really help you clarify what you really want out of this life. What is really important to you.
