Nurture your friendships

When it comes to friendships, you want good friends in your life, but you also must be a good friend. A friendship is just like any other relationship, it takes work. In the beginning and again to keep it thriving. I have so many good friendships in my life and I am grateful for them all. I don't take them for granted. I work at them. I make sure to keep in touch with those that are important to me. I let them know when something funny reminds me of them or a time we spent together. I make sure I spend time with them. I try to make it known how much I appreciate them.

Today is one of my dear friends birthday. So, happy birthday to Tracey! She is the woman who blessed me when she spent my birthday with me a few weeks ago. She went out of her way to make it special for me. I love her for it and I will reciprocate. Not today, lol...but I will make sure to reach out to her and make her feel as special as I can while not being close to her. And I will have her back to visit as soon as she can make it and I will spoil her.

When I turned 50 a few weeks ago I didn't have a party but I did ask a bunch of people to join me for a drink. My friend Megan made sure to get there early with some balloons and yell surprise as I walked through the door. I knew she would do something like that because it's the type of person she is and she's fabulous. She really knows how to make someone feel special. Not just on birthday's but all the time. She makes friendship a priority. She reaches out to get together. She offers to get me things I love from Costco because she has a card and I don't. She knows me so well, she always gets me gifts that are so me and I just love. I am a nut about starfish. She has gotten me so much starfish themed items I could probably start my own shop! And the greatest thing about her is that even though she is extremely busy she always makes time for the friendships in her life. So, the theory that you don't have time to invest won't work with me. Megan has a son in first grade and one in high school. Her and her husband have their own business that they run themselves. She is busy as a bee and is probably the friend that reaches out the most to me. Even if she can't get together she makes sure to reach out with a text just to say hi or check in with me about something we had talked about during our last get together. You have to be willing to be a good friend in order to have good friends.

I have a lot of friends I still keep in touch from when I lived in Pennsylvania. Just because I moved away doesn't mean I don't want to see them anymore. I make it a point to get together with them when I am in town. And I made arrangements to be there for parties and big events that happen in their lives. I also invite them to my house and have girls weekends so we can bond and have fun. They are all important to me and I make sure to keep up with them.

I have made a bunch of new friends in my neighborhood in the past few years. It all started with the creation of a book club and now there is a whole group of ladies I spend a lot of time with. I'm also not done. I don't think you can have too many friends. I mentioned I just joined another group in the area and it's actually got girlfriends in the name! It seems to be a very active group with many gatherings. I look forward to attending some of them and meeting new people. Meanwhile, I've already made one new friend from the group. There was a woman who commented on a post of mine in the group and then friend requested me. I don't usually accept requests from people I don't know but oddly, we have friends in common locally and in Pa. So I got together with her for a drink earlier this week. I think we hit it off pretty good. Always be open to new friendships. The more the merrier!

If you are looking for some solid friendships in your life, then make sure you are a good friend. Go out of your way for people. Believe me, they notice. If a friendship has dropped off then reach out. Get together. Rekindle it. And make new friends. Join groups on Facebook. If there isn't a group you are interested in, start your own group. There is a woman from our book club that plays pickle ball and she started talking about it and a lot of the ladies were interested. Now, we get together on a regular basis for pickle ball when the weather cooperates. Whatever you are interested in, there are others as well. You just have to find them. Facebook makes it really easy. Just post about your interest in your community page and see who's up for getting together for it. Oh, you aren't in your local Facebook community group? Then join! It's so easy. It's never been so easy to find things to do and make friends. Just be a good friend in return.

It's hump day already! Think about the friends in your life. Are you grateful for them? Then tell them how much they mean to you! And always be on the lookout for new people. New people bring new things to your life. Now, go make today, your best day yet!
